University education, 1918-1963
A
- oxford and Cambridge dominate university education with 22% of students in 1939
- government funding increases from £1 million in 1919 to over £80 million by 1962. Bursaries and grants become more common as the period goes on
- major boost to numbers at university: 20,000 in 1900, 38,000 in 1938 and 113,000 in 1962
- different universe have specialities
- only 22 universities by 1963
- still mainly for the upper class male at this point- number of women at oxbridge was only 13%
