describe ASK I the 5 A’s
-identify all patients at every visit - record all information for the behavioural risk factors in question
describe ADVISE in the 5A’s
provide basic advice on the negative health effects in a non-judgemental manner
-clear and personalise advice
describe ASSESS in the 5A’s
- determine the willingness and confidence to make a quit attempt
-use MI communication skills, and the TTM model to identify the stage of change
describe ASSIST in 5A’s
help the patient to develop strategies for changing their behaviour - goal setting, behavioural support etc
describe ARRANGE in the 5a’s
arrange a follow up appointment within 1 month, to provide further support, refer to a specialist service for more support .. document the intervention

what are tips for open ended questions?
- open ended - cannot be answered in 1 word
-encourages the patient to talk and express themselves - helps to establish trust and acceptance
what is the 80:20 rule ?
the patient should do 80% of the talking, and the healthcare professional the other 20%
describe the 0-10 scaling exercise
- solution focussed approaches to help the patient think about and articulate their reasons for changing their behaviour
-eg on a scale from 0-10, how important is it for you to (insert behaviour)
