Breathing And Gas Exchange Flashcards
What are the two parts that breathing can be divided into?
- Ventilation
- gas exchange
What is ventilation?
Getting air into and out of lungs
What is gas exchange?
How gases move into or out of bloodstream - waste gases removed and oxygen absorbed
What is ventilation in humans?
Movement of air through nose or mouth, down trachea, through bronchi/bronchioles and into alveoli of lungs
What does ventilation consist of?
Inhaling and exhaling
What is inhaling?
Breathing in
What is exhaling?
Breathing out
Whats the first thing that happens when you inhale?
Diaphragm contracts and flattens
Whats the second thing that happens when you inhale?
Intercostal muscles contract
Whats the third thing that happens when you inhale?
Ribs move up and out
Whats the fourth thing that happens when you inhale?
Volume in chest cavity increases
Whats the fifth thing that happens when you inhale?
Air pressure inside chest cavity and therefore lungs decrease below atmospheric air pressure
Whats the sixth and final thing that happens when you inhale?
Air rushes in from higher pressure outside mouth into area of lower pressure in lungs
Whats the first thing that happens when you exhale?
Diaphragm relaxes and domes back into original position
Whats the second thing that happens when you exhale?
Intercostal muscles relax
