Sternal edge - midaxillary line
What do the breasts lie on?
Deep pectoral fascia
How are the breasts attached to the dermis?
Suspensory ligament of cooper
How many lobules of glandular tissue are contained within each breast?
15-20
What is each lobule drained by?
Lactiferous duct
What is a lactiferous sinus?
The dilated portion of a duct
What is the location of the nipple?
Variable or 4th intercostal space
What are the four quadrants of the breast?
Superolateral
Superomedial
Inferomedial
Inferolateral
What is the axillary tail?
An extension of the breast tissue
Where is the axillary tail located?
Superolateral quadrant
What is gynecomastia?
Postnatal development of rudimentary lactiferous ducts in males
During midpuberty about 2/3rd of boys develop varying degrees of hyperplasia of the breasts
What is polymastia/amastia?
An extra breast/absence of breast
What is polythelia/athelia?
An extra nipple/absence of nipple
What is the blood supply of the breast?
Branches of the axillary, internal thoracic and some intercostal arteries
Nerves of breast
Anterior and lateral cutaneous branches of 4-6th intercostal nerves
