Brain tumours Flashcards
Name the adult brain tumors
- Glioblastoma Multiforme
- Oligodendroglioma
- Meningioma
- Hemangioblastoma
- Pituitary adenoma
- Schwannoma
What adult tumour commonly crosses the midline?
Glioblastoma Multiforme
What tumor will have pseudopalisading tumor cells and will be GFAP +ve on histology?
Glioblastoma Multiforme
What are the features of glioblastoma multiforme (histology and on CT)?
Histology:
- Pseudopalisading tumor cells
- GFAP +ve
Grossly:
- Crossing midline + Malignant
GlioPlastoma Multiforme
- G: GFAP +ve
- P: Pseudopalisading cells
- M: Midline + Malignant
What tumor will have a ‘chicken wire capillary pattern’, ‘fried egg’ cells and calcified tumors?
Oligodendroglioma
OliEGGodendroglioma
- chicken-wire, fried egg cells, calcium
Why are Oligodendroglioma cells called fried egg cells, what is seen on histology?
Round nuclei with a clear cytoplasm
What will be seen on histology in meningioma?
- Psammoma bodies and spindle cells
What meninges do menigiomas arise from?
Arachnoid
Where are meningiomas located?
Superficially
Are meningiomas benign or malignant?
Benign
Are glioblastoma multiforme benign or malignant?
Malignant
Oligodendroglioma benign or malignant?
Can be both
What are the features of meningiomas?
Also pneumonic:
- Benign
- Superficial
- Arachnoid origin
- Psammoma bodies and spindle cells on histology
MEN have problems with PSA
- Psamomma bodies
- Superficial, Spindle cells
- Arachnoid origin
What are the general and histological features of hemangioblastoma?
- Blood vessel origin - EPO producing
- Thin-walled capillaries on histology
- Associated with Von Hippel Lindau (chr 3)
Where are Schwannomas located?
Cerebellopontine angle
- CN7 and 8
