Brain Pathologies Flashcards
Acute inflammation and demyelination of peripheral sensory/motor fibers; Immune system attacks Schwann cells
Guillain Barre
extension of both arms and legs. Indicates more severe lesion (below red nucleus)
decerebrate posturing
a condition of muscular weakness caused by nerve damage or disease; partial paralysis
paresis
flexion of both arms at elbow and extension of both legs
decorticate posturing
these are symptoms of what hyperkinetic disorder? chorea, decreased executive function, impulsive, sexually inappropriate behavior
Huntington’s
trouble controlling speech muscles
dysarthria
Parkinson’s plus syndrome involving: Akinetic/rigid motor symptoms, corticospinal tract dysfunction (trouble w/upper limb movements), cerebellar signs (dysarthria, gait ataxia), AD, decreased oriented cognition and difficulty directing attention.
multiple system atrophy
Parkinson’s plus syndrome involving: Early onset gait instability, rigidity, freezing of gait, depression, psychosis, rage attacks
progressive supranuclear palsy
these are symptoms of what hyperkinetic disorder? genetic, non-progressive. Involuntary, sustained muscle contractions causing abnormal postures or twisting, repetitive movements
Dystonia
disorder w/signs that mimic Parkinson’s but are toxic, infectious or traumatic in nature
Parkinsonism
dilation of the wall of an artery or vein. Swelling can lead to a rupture
cerebral aneurysm
inability to process sensory information
agnosia
