Brain Intro Flashcards
Dorsal horn
pseudo unipolar (posterior) horn
Ventral horn
Motor
Lateral horn
Autonomics
IML (sympathetic)
Six major categories of neurons
sensory motor pre-ganglionic autonomic post-ganglionic autonomic Local interneurons Projection
Types of Neurons
-Multipolar
+multiple branches leave the cell body
-Bipolar
+two processes leave the cell body
-Pseudo-unipolar
+one axon with two branches: central and peripheral
-Unipolar
+only a single process leaves the cell body
Types of Neuroglia
Glia = connective tissue of brain CNS & PNS
Astrocytes - buffer between nerve cell and blood vessels.
Also provide structural and metabolic support
Oligodendrocytes - CNS myelination
(each one can myelinate multiple)
Schwann cells - PNS (can repair nerves)
Microglia - clean things up after injury
Describe the cerebral lobes
Frontal - motor neurons
Parietal - somatosensory
Temporal - auditory
Occipital - visual
Insula
Found in the lateral fissure
wellspring of social emotions
Describe the components of the Diencephalon
Thalamus - conveys almost all motor and sensory information to cerebral cortex
Hypothalamus - controls autonomic nervous system
Pineal
Choroid Plexus
Calcarine fissure
Vision is processed most intensely near the calcarine fissure
Lentiform Nucleus
Globus pallidus and putamen
Corpora Quadra Gemini
Superior Colliculus - vision
Inferior Colliculus - hearing
