Ascending & Descending Pathways Flashcards
1
Q
What information does the Dorsal Column Pathway confer?
A
2 pt. discrimination, vibration sense, proprioception
2
Q
Romberg’s sign
A
- dorsal column destroyed (Tabes dorsalis)
- requires vision to stand steady
- positive sign is sensory ataxia
- stomping gait
3
Q
Syringomyelia
A
Growing lesion (hole) which knocks out Spinothalamic tract, losing pain and temperature from the neck first and progressively down to the feet
4
Q
Brown-Sequard Lesion
A
- cut one side of spinal cord
- ipsilateral loss of DCP (has not crossed yet)
- contralateral loss of spinal thalamic tract
5
Q
Wallenberg syndrome
A
- loss of pain and temp on ipsilateral face (spinal trigeminal tract)
- loss of pain and temp on contralateral body (STT)
6
Q
Upper Motor Neuron Damage
A
- Spasticity
- Hemiplegia
- Hyper reflexivity
7
Q
ALS & Polio
A
Damage pyramidal cells & lower motor neurons
-one is a virus, one is a syndrome
8
Q
Babinsky sign
A
- Thumb points up, toes fan out
- indicative of upper motor neuron damage
9
Q
Lower Motor Neuron Damage
A
- Flaccid paralysis
- Facciculations
- Hypo-reflexivity
