brain anatomy and fucntion Flashcards
1
Q
what are the 7 main parts of the CNS
A
- spinal cord
- medulla oblong at a
- pons
- cerebellum
- mid brain
- diencephalon
- cerebral hemispheres
2
Q
spinal cord
A
- provides a 2 way conducting pathway to and from the brain
- ascending tracts and descending tracts
- major reflex centre
3
Q
medulla oblong at a
A
- this is part of the brain stem
- contains several centres responsible for vital autonomic functions
- contains nuclei which are associated with ascending sensory tracts of the spinal cord
- contains nuclei which relay info on state muscle stretch to the cerebellum
4
Q
pons
A
- part of the brain stem
- conveys information between cerebral hemispheres and the cerebellum
- contains respiratory nuclei which cooperate with the medulla nuclei to control respiration ( inspiration and expiration)
5
Q
cerebellum
A
- modulates the force and range of movements
- involved in learning motor skills
- connected to the brain stem but not part of the brain stem
6
Q
mid brain
A
- controls sensory and motor functions
including eye movement and the co ordination of visual and auditory reflexes
7
Q
diencephalon
A
- contains two mains structures
- thalamus and hypothalamus
thalamus
- processes information ascending the cerebral cortex and mediates sensation, motor activities and cognition proceseses
hypothalamus
- mains control centre of the body for homeostatsis
also contains the limbic system which is used for fear
8
Q
cerebral hemispheres
A
- contains our conscious mind. where executive functions are carried out
- motors areas that controls voluntary movement
- contains sensory areas that provide conscious awareness of sensations
- contains areas that integrate info for purposeful actions
