Brain Flashcards
Frontal lobe (3 parts)
Precentral gyrus
Prefrontal cortex
Premotor cortex
Precentral gyrus
Control of voluntary muscle activation
Prefrontal cortex
Emotions, judgments, higher cognitive function (ideation & abstraction)
Premotor Cortex
Planning movements, include Broca’s area
Broca’s area
Controls MOTOR aspects of speech
Parietal lobe
Postcentral gyrus: primary sensory cortex for integration of sensation
Receives fibers conveying touch, proprioception, pain, and temperature sensation from OPPOSITE side of body
Temporal lobe
Primary auditory cortex
Associative auditory cortex
Wernicke’s area
Primary auditory cortex
Associative auditory cortex
Receives/processes auditory stimuli
Processes auditory stimuli
Wernicke’s area
Language comprehension
Occipital lobe
Primary visual cortex
Receives and processes visual stimuli
Visual association cortex
Processes visual stimuli
Insula
Deep within lateral sulcus, associated with AUTOMATIC function
Limbic system
Lots of structures
instincts & emotions contributing to preservation of the individual
Feeding, aggression, emotions, sexual response, long term memory formation
White matter
Myelinated nerve fibers
Transverse: connects between two hemispheres
Projection: connect hemispheres to brain and spinal cord
Association fibers: connect within same hemisphere, allows it to work all together
Basal ganglia
Forms an associate motor system with nuclei in subthalmus and midbrain
Interconnects with caudate loop (motor plans) and putamen loop (scale and adjust movements)
Thalamus
Sensory: relays sensory info to brain
Taste, touch, sight, sound—NOT SMELL
Motor: relay info from cerebellum to globus pallidus to precentral motor cortex
Other: assists with visceral and somatic functions
