Brain Flashcards
5 secondary brain vesicles in development
Telencephalon
Diencephalon
Mesencephalon
Metencephalon
Myelencephalon
Walls & Cavities of secondary brain vesicles in development
T- Cerebrum & Lateral ventricles
D- Thalamus, Hypothalamus, Epithalamus (Pineal Gland), & 3rd Ventricle
Mes- Midbrain & Aqueduct of Midbrain
Met- Pons, Cerebellum, & Upper part of 4th ventricle
Mye- Medulla Oblongata & Lower part of 4th ventricle
What are the 4 principal parts of the brain?
Brainstem, Cerebellum, Cerebrum, & Diencephalon
What is the largest part of the brain?
Cerebrum
What are the layers of the Cranial Meninges from brain surface to skin?
Pia Mater
Arachnoid Mater
Meningeal Layer of Dura Mater
Periosteal Layer of Dura Mater
What are the 2 differences between the cranial & spinal menginges?
1) Cranial meninge Dura Mater has 2 layers where spinal cord dura mater only has 1
2) No epidural space around the brain
How do Astrocytes play a role in the Blood Brain Barrier?
Astrocytes hand pick & choose which nutrients to take from capillaries and put into neurons.
What % of oxygen/energy is used by the resting brain?
20% of oxygen and glucose used by body even when resting
How long of an interruption of blood flow until damage?
1 or 2 minutes impairs neural function
4 minutes of oxygen deprivation causes permanent injury
Where is CSF made and how much does the body hold?
Made in the Choroid Plexuses in walls of the ventricles (starts in Lateral Ventricles).
3-5 ozs or 80- 150MLs
What is the flow of CSF? Where is it reabsorbed?
Choroid Plexus of Lateral Ventricles
Inerventricular Formina
3rd Ventricle
Cerebral Aqueduct
4th Ventricle
Median Apenture
Subarachnoid Space
Up & over surface of brain
Reabsorbed through Arachnoid Villi to Venous Blood
What are the 3 parts of the brainstem?
Midbrain, Pons, Medulla Oblongata
