define
this is when the otoconia from the utricle displaces into one of the semi-circular canals (usually the posterior)
causes
idiopathic
head trauma
ear surgery
presentation
dizziness lasting seconds
dizzy rolling over in bed
vertigo when looking up, turning in bed (worse on affected side), first lying down/getting up, bending forward or moving head too quickly (often only in one direction)
vertigo on rotational movement of the head
what condition should BPPV be distinguished from?
vertebrobasilar insufficiency
what is different about vertebrobasilar insufficiency?
there needs to be symptoms of impaired circulation in posterior brain assocaited with vertigo including visual disturbance, weakness and numbness
