BP- Neurons Flashcards
What are neurons?
specialised nerve cells that move electrical impulses to and from the CNS
What are dendrites?
recieve an electrical impulse (action potential) from other neurons or sensory receptors.
What is an axon?
A long fibre that carries the electrical impulse from the cell body to the axon terminal.
What is the myelin sheath?
Insulating layer that protects the axon and speeds up the transmission of the electrical impulse.
What are the Nodes of Ranvier?
These are gaps in the myelin sheath that speed up transmission of electrical impulse along the axon.
Where are sensory neurons found?
Sensory neurons are found in the sensory receptors (e.g eyes, ears, tongue and skin)
- long dendrites and short axon
What is the role of sensory neurons?
- Sensory neurons carry electrical impulses from sensory receptors to the CNS via the PNS.
What is the role of motor neurons?
- They send electrical impulses via long axons to the glands and muscles called effectors.
- short dendrites and long axons
Where are relay neurons found?
Relay neurons are found in the CNS.(spinal cord)
- short dendrites and short axons
What is the role of the relay neuron?
- They connect sensory neurons to motor
neurons so that they can communicate with one another.
