BP- Nervous system Flashcards
What are the four main areas of the brain?
Cerebrum, cerebrellum, diencephalon, brain stem
What is the nervous system divided into?
Central and peripheral nervous system
What is the cerebrum responsible for?
Movement, problem solving, speech
What is the cerebellum responsible for?
Responsible for motor skills and coordination
What is the diencephalon responsible for?
- It contains the thalamus and hypothalamus.
- Responsible for regulating body temperature, stress response and eating
What is the brain stem responsible for?
- Regulates breathing and heart rate
What does the central nervous system consist of?
The brain and spinal cord
What does the peripheral nervous system consist of?
- It consists of the nervous system throughout the rest of the body.
- Transmits messages via the neurons to and from CNS.
What are the two divisions of the PNS?
- The somatic nervous system
- The autonomic nervous system
What does the somatic nervous system do?
- Controls muscle movement
- under conscious control
- Transmits and receives messages from receptor cells
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
- It is controlled by the brain stem.
- It is automatic and unconscious. controls vital functions like heart rate, breathing and digestion
What are the two divisions of ANS?
1) Sympathetic nervous system
2) Parasympathetic nervous system
What does the sympathetic nervous system do?
- Activated when a person is stressed.
- Increases heart rate and breathing
- Stops digestion
- Salivation reduces
- Pupils dilate
- Fight/flight response begins
What does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
- Activated when a person is relaxing.
- Heart rate and breathing reduce.
- Digestion starts
- Salivation increases
- Pupils constrict
- Body relaxes
