Boys + Literacy
-Parents spend less time reading to sons, futhermore its mothers who read so they see it as feminine
-Boys leisure activites like football do little to improve communication skills
Globalisation
-Since 1980s significant decline in traditional mens jobs
-Mitsos + Borwne see this leading to a crisis in masculinity due to many boys believing they have little prospect of getting a job
Feminisation of education
-Sewell (2006)- school has become feminised as tey do nurture the masuline traits of competitiveness and leadership
-Sees coursework as a major cause in achievement
Shortage of male primary school teachers
-Lack of male role models both in and outside of school is a major cause of underachievement, 1.5million female headed lone parent families
-42% said having a male made them work harder
Laddish subcultures
-Epsein (1998)- WC boys more likely to get harrassed, labelled and subject to homophobic abuse
-As a result lads conformed to peers not wanting to be labelled as swots or sissies
Moral panic
-Rinrose (1998)- panic reflects the fear that underachieving boys will create social stability by being an unemployed underclass
-Education policy has shifted, as a result of only focusing on Wc boys ignore ethnic minority students, ignores other issues like sexual harrasment
