Summary of Book Five
Book five begins in the sea chambers of Kalypso at dawn. Athens is vexed about how Odysseus is still on Kalypso’s island and complained to her father, Zeus. Zeus listened and sent Hermes to Kalypso’s island to talk it out. Kalypso was angry about how the gods couldn’t understand a goddess taking in a mortal man to love when the gods do it all the time with mortal women. Soon after, Odysseus escapes and hid in a thick bush to keep his warmth. Athena watched him and put him to a deep slumber, hoping to end his distress.
