Book 2. Chapter 11: Prayer of the Traveler Flashcards
The Madhhab states that traveling is when you have traveled how far?
15 Farsakhs or 50 miles
Ibn Qudamah states that in order to be traveling one must
not utilize mileage but instead look at what is considered traveling by the customs of the people.
Aisha says in regards to the traveling prayer
The salah was prescribed in Mecca in sets of 2 raka’ahs. When the Prophet (s) came to Madina, two raka’ahs were added to each salah except Maghrib as it is the witr of the day time and fajr due to it’s long recital. However if one travels, he performs the original prayer.
One does not shorten the prayer if she
- Prays behind a resident
- Does not intend to shorten the prayer
- Forgets a prayer that became due on him while a resident and remembers it while traveling.
- Forgets a prayer that became due while traveling and remembers while a resident.
The various madhahib rulings on shortening the prayer
Hanafi: Obligatory
Maliki: Stressed Sunnah
Shafee and Hanbali: Preferable
The Hanbali Madhhab says if one stays for this amount of time they must complete their prayers.
21 prayers or 4 full days and one prayer with the intention of staying more than this time. If not, he may continue to shorten.
