Body Systems - Nervous system Flashcards
nervous system
includes brain, spinal cord & complex system of nerves
send messages between the brain and body
neuron
a specialised cell that transmits nerve impulses
stimulus
any information the body recieves that causes it to respond
recpetor
a structure that detects a stimulus or change in the normal functioning of the body
CNS
Central nervous system
the brain and spinal cord
PNS
peropheral nervous system
all neurons outside the brain & spinal cord
carries message to and from all parts of the body
stimulus response model
stimulus -> receptor -> control center -> effector -> response
reflex
an involuntary movement in response to a stimulus
effector
an organ or cell that acts in response to a stimulus
Parietal lobe
Behind Frontal lobes
controls senses and sensations
occipital
found at back of head near the bottom
process visual information
perceive shapes and colour
temporal lobe
Found in the middle under the parietal lobe
words and speech
recognise and process sound
some parts of memory
frontal lobe
just behind forehead
biggest lobe
language, speech, problem solving, decision making, paying attention, memory, emotions, impulses, planning
cerebellum
back of brain
movements, balance,coordination
brain stem
base of brain
regulates involuntary functions
(e.g. breathing, swallowing, heart beating)
