Body Systems - Immune System Flashcards
immune system
a system of organs and structures that protect organims against disease
immune
able to fight an infection as a result of prior exposure
vaccination
an injection of an inactive, or artificial, pathogen that results in the organism become immune to a certain disease
1st line of defence
Barrier/shield to stop germs getting into the body
(e.g. skin, mucus, tears, earwax)
2nd line of defence
non-specific/general response in an attempt to destroy the disease
(e.g. fever, inflamation, blood clotting, white blood cells)
3rd line of defence
a specific response to a particular pathogen
Kills it using B-cells, T-cells, memory cells and antibodies
antibody
a molecule that is produced by b-cells
binds to a specific pathogen
B-cell
produces antibodies in response to pathogens
pathogen
a bacterium, virus or other microorganism that can cause disease
phagocyte
cell that surrounds, absorbs and destroys pathogens
white blood cells
cell that destroys pathogens
T-cell
cell that regognises and kills pathogens
memory cell
cell produced in response to an infection
retains the memory of how to fight the pathogen
lymphocyte
immune cells that are made in the bone marrow
(b-cells and t-cells)
