Body Fluids Integrative Session - McCormick Flashcards
Isosmotic volume contraction/expansion
Osmolality stays same in both
ECF volume increases
Example of isosmotic fluid loss
Vomiting or diarrhea
Hyperosmotic volume contraction - loss of water
Ex. dehydration
Osmolarity of ECF would I, volume would decrease
ICF would give fluid, so vol would D and osm would I
Examples of hyper osmotic volume contraction from loss of water?
Dehydration, diabetes insipidus
Hyperosmotic volume contraction - gain of NaCl
Ex. eat 3 bags of chips, mannitol
ECF volume and Osm would increase
ICF vol would decrease and Osm would increase
Hyposmotic volume contraction - loss of NaCl
Ex. on diuretics too long
ECF vol and Osm would decrease
Osm of ICF would decrease (losing NaCl)
volume would increase
Hyposmotic volume expansion - gain of water
ECF volume would increase, Osm would decrease
ICF would increase because equilibrium
ex. SIADH, psychogenic polydipsia
How would a dehydrated body compensate?
Osmoregulatory - most sensitive
– ADH, thirst
Volume systems - this has to increase 10-15%
– SNS, RAAS, ANP (retain Na+)
Can you fix a problem with just thirst alone?
Nope.
Need thirst
Predict changes in runner ADH Thirst SNS RAAS ANP
ADH - I Thirst - I SNS - I RAAS - I ANP - D!! This one is different, want to retain Na+ so you retain water
Sweating leads to?
Increased thirst and ADH release to replace water loss
