What is the medical definition of wound?
Disruption to the continuit of the tissues produced by external mechanical force
What is the legal definition of wound?
Breach of full thickness of skin or lining of lip - excludes bruising, abrasion)

Do abrasions leave a scar?
No
What are the most useful injuries forensically?
Abrasions- indicate site of impact, direction, nature of object and potential for trace evidence transfer
Can bruising occur post mortem?
No- always vital phenomenon
What produces the colour change in bruises?
Chemical degradation of haemoglobin:
haemosiderin, biliverdin, bilirubin
What makes a bruise dark red?
Oxyhaemoglobin
What makes a bruise purple/black?
Deoxyhaemoglobin
