Q
What do you do if someone is choking
A
- Ask “Are you choking?”
- If verbally confirms choking, then partial obstruction, so
encourage to cough - If confirms non verbally (ie
nods head) as unable to
speak, then complete
obstruction - Call for assistance
- Back slaps x5, abdominal thrusts x5, continue in rotation till obstruction clears or victim becomes unconscious (then
start CPR)

How do you place someone in the recovery position
A
- Kneel besides casualty, remove any spectacles or wristwatch and check their pockets for bully items
- Place the arm nearest to you at right angles to their body with arm bent in to position it falls. Do not attempt to force the arm into an unnatural position
- Bring the arm furthest away from you across the chest and hold the back of the hand against the nearest cheek
- With your other hand, grasp the far leg just above the knee and pull it up but keep the foot on the ground
- Keep their hand pressed against the cheek and pull on the leg to roll the casualty towards you and onto their side
- Roll gently, supporting the head constantly
- Adjust the upper leg so that both the hip and knee are bent at right angles. Adjust the hand under the cheek if necessary to keep the head tilted
- Casualty is now in recovery position

What are the steps for adult BLS
A
- Check for safety e.g. cables, traffic, water, body fluids
- Check responsiveness
- Shout for help
- Airway- open airway and check for obstructions
- Breathing and other signs of life– look, listen, feel (maximum 10 seconds)
- If not breathing, send for help, or go yourself (“adult, no signs of life, and
location”) Ask for AED/crash trolley if available - Chest compressions/ ventilation: ratio 30:2. Rate 100-120. Depth 5-6 cm
- Continue till help arrives/the victim shows signs of recovery/you become
exhausted

What are the steps for paeds BLS
A
- Check for safety e.g. cables, traffic, water, body fluids

If not breathing, send for help if someone available, but do not go yourself - Chest compressions/ ventilation: ratio 30:2. Rate 100-120. Depth 1/3 chest
Start with 5 ventilations. After 1 minute of CPR go for help - Continue till help arrives/the victim shows signs of recovery/you become exhausted

Only maintains a circulation, does not restart the heart

A
