Explain what you do before an extraction
- Mask, visor, wash/dry hands, gloves
- Check medical history of patient to identify any potential complications and/or contraindications to the LA/XLA. Look out for bisphosphonates, bleeding problems, poorly controlled diabetes, severe hypertension, alcoholism, heavy smokers
- Safe surgery checklist and consent
- LA
- Forceps selection

Where do you stand
Infront of pt (except for lower right-stand behind)
What should your supporting hand do
2 fingers either side of the tooth
Use the three-finger claw grip for the lower left
What should your posture be like
Upper –
* Pt at 45 degrees
* Fencing lunge
* Head at shoulder height
Lower –
* Upright pt
* Wider legged stance
* Head at elbow height
What is the correct technique
Apply forceps to root as far down root as possible
Place buccal first, then lingual/palatal
Apply apical pressure
What is the post-operative procedure after extracting
- Check that apices are in tact
- Squeeze bone to restore normal shape and encourage clot
- Bite on gauze until haemostasis achieved
- POI and leaflet
