What do check with airway
Initial observations
- self reported symptoms, unusual sensations (something stuck, itching, burning, swallowing difficulty)
Audible sounds
- inability to complete a full sentence in one breath
- altered voice quality (sudden hoarseness, rasping)
- wheeze, stridor, gurgle, cough, snore
Visual inspections
- swelling, irritation, injury, presence of foreign body
What do you check with breathing
Pulse oximetry
- normal ranges of O2 depend of pt risk of hypercapnia
- low risk of hypercapnia 94-98%
- high risk of hypercapnia 88-92%
Respiratory rate
- normal range 12-20bpm
- childrens rates are higher than that of adults
