Blood Vessels chp 26 and Lymph chp 27 Flashcards
Blood vessels
carry blood from heart to organs and back
space w in BV = lumen
Artery
away from heart
walls - smooth muscle and elastic fibers - carries pulse and extension of vessels
branching lead to arterioles (same composition)
Capillaries
connections btw arterioles and venules
exchange of nutrients and waste from blood and tissue
Vein
from venules, by tributaries, carry blood back to heart
thinner wall than artery
most have valves (one way flow to heart)
blood moves past valves via contraction of surrounding muscles
Lymphatic system
takes care of excess fluid filtered out of capillaries which exceeds reabsorbed amt
Lymphatic capillaries
pick up excess fluid moving it towards veins, endothelial tubes, begin blindly (not open at both ends)
excess fluid = lymph
Afferent lymphatic vessel
several lymphatic capillaries joining together
have folds that form valves
convey lymph to lymph nodes
Lymph nodes
filter lymph
have cortex and medulla
Efferent lymphatic vessels
leaving lymph nodes
pass lymph to venous system
Right lymphatic duct
drains right half of head, neck, chest and right upper limb
end in brachiocephalic or tributaries
Thoracic duct
drains rest of body
end in brachiocephalic or tributaries
Cisterna Chyli
collects lymph inferior to diaphragm
flows superiorly forming thoracic duct
Lymph nodes are prevalent where…
Inguinal, axilla, neck
