Blood Vessels And The Heart Flashcards
What is Plasma and what does it do?
The blood plasma is a yellow liquid. The plasma transports all of your blood cells and some other substances around your body. Plasma carries red and white blood cells and platelets.
What do Red Blood Cells do?
The Red Blood Cells pick up oxygen from the air in your lungs and carry it to the cells where it is needed.
What are the White Blood Cells and what do they do?
They have a nucleus and is the body’s defence system against harmful microorganisms.
What are platelets and what do they do?
Platelets are small fragments of cells. They have no nucleus. They are important in helping the blood to clot at the site of a wound.
Name some features about arteries.
- Thick Walls
- Thick layer of muscle and elastic fibres
- Carry blood away from the heart
- Very dangerous to cut
- Feel as a pulse
- Bright red oxygenated blood
Name some features about veins.
- Relatively thin walls
- Often have valves
- Large lumen
- Carry blood away from organs
- Low oxygen
- No pulse
Name some features about capillaries.
- The wall is a single cell thick
- Tiny vessel that narrow lumen
- Network of tiny vessels
- Link artieries and veins
- Enables oxygen and glucose to diffuse easily
- CO2 passes easily
What is the Double Circulatory System?
The Double Circulatory Sytem is where the blood must pass through the heart TWICE to perform one complete circuit of the body.
What is the circuit for the Double Circulatory System?
- Heart > Lungs > Heart
- Heart > Body > Heart
