B8 - Photosynthesis Flashcards
Function of Guard cells
allows the exchange of gases (CO2 in / O2 out)
Function of stomata
reduces the distance for CO2 to diffuse into the leaf absorbs sunlight guard cells phloem tubes
Function of chlorophyll
absorbs sunlight
Function of phloem tubes
transports food in the plant
Function of xylem tubes
transports water in the plant
Function of thin shape
change shape to open and close the stomata
What is Photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make food using carbon dioxide, water and light.
When does Photosynthesis occur? Why?
Photosynthesis only occurs during the day because plants need light
What layer of the leaf does most photosynthesis occur in?
Spongy mesophyll
How does the rate of photosynthesis change as the distance of the lamp is increased?
The rate of photosynthesis is slowed down as the lamp gets further away.
This is because the plant needs light to photosynthesise.
Name the process that produced starch.
Photosynthesis
Some of the glucose produced in photosynthesis is converted to starch.
Name three other products that glucose can be converted into in a plant.
Protein/amino acids, Lipids, Cellulose
Explain why the plant stores glucose as starch.
Converts to insoluble starch for storage
Why do animals have to eat plants or other animals?
Because they can’t produce their own food
Why is sunlight necessary for photsynthesis?
For cells to live and grow
