B3 - Organisation and the Digestive System Flashcards
Describe one reason why the stomach contains acids.
One reason why the stomach contains acids is that it kills bacteria.
Where is Bile produced? Where is it stored?
It is produced in the liver and stored in the gall bladder.
State the food component that bile digests?
Bile takes fats / lipids and breaks them down into fatty acids.
What are the three different Nutrients?
Fats
Carbohydrates
Protein
Made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen
What would you do to test if starch is present?
Use yellow red iodine solution.
Red means no starch is present.
Blue-Black means starch is present.
What would you do to do test if sugar is present?
Use Blue Benedict’s solution.
Blue means no sugar is present.
Green means some sugar is present.
Red means lots of sugar is present.
What would you do to test if protein is present?
Use Biuret Reagent.
The chemical stays blue if no protein is present.
The chemical turns purple if a protein is present.
What would you do to test if Lipid/Fat is present?
Use Ethanol.
A cloudy white layer is produced if a lipid/fat is present.
What are Enzymes?
Enzymes are special proteins involved in ‘metabolism’ (reactions in body) and help to speed up reactions.
They build up, break or change molecules.
What do digestive enzymes do?
Digestive enzymes break food into small soluble molecules that can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
What enzyme breaks down fats? Which system does the enzyme work?
Lipase - Small Intestine
What are the products of breaking down fats?
Fatty Acids and Glycerol.
What enzyme breaks down proteins? Which system does this enzyme work in?
Protease - Stomach and Small Intestine
What are the products of breaking down proteins?
Amino acids.
What is the enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates? Which system does the enzyme work in?
Carbohydrase - Mouth and Small Intestine
