Blood vessels Flashcards
What are the blood vessels
They are are tubes that carry blood away from the heart toward the tissues of the
body and then return the blood to the heart
What are the 5 types of blood vessels
- Arteries - aorta
- Arterioles
- Capillaries
- Venules
- Veins - superior vena cava and inferior vena cava
Where does the blood flows through?
Blood flows through the lumen of blood vessels.
What are the 3 major layers of the walls of the blood vessels
1) tunica intima
2) tunica media
3) outer tunica externa
What is the tunica intima composed of
1) endothelium and connective tissue
2) continuous with inner lining of heart (endocardium)
What is the tunica media composed of
dense irregular collagenous connective tissue
-Vasomotor nerves
-Vaso vasora —small vessels supplying oxygen and nutrients to
tunica media and tunica externa
What are some differences between walls of typical artery and typical vein
- Most arteries have much thicker tunica media than do veins
- Internal and external elastic lamina are much more extensive in arteries than in veins
What are he two major types of arteries
a) large elastic (conducting) arteries
b) medium-sized muscular (distributing) arteries
What are some characteristics of the large elastic arteries
1) Largest arteries in the body
2) The largest diameter among arteries
3) Elastic lamellae
4) Pressure reservoir
What are some characteristics of the medium-sized muscular (distributing) arteries
1) Capable of greater vasoconstriction and vasodilation
2) Have a well-defined tunica media
3) Control blood flow
What is an arteriole?
a branch of an artery that delivers blood to a capillary network 1) regulate blood flow from arteries to capillaries 2) regulate blood pressure
The metartiole is the terminal end
The precapillary sphincter the connective thing
Venules
Capillaries unite 1) form post capillary venules 2) venules unite into muscular venules. 3) venules deliver blood from capillaries to veins.
What are the 2 largest veins
superior vena cava and inferior vena cava
2 characteristics of veins
1) Veins lack the external or internal elastic laminae
2) Often have valves
What veins travel through the hypodermis
Superficial veins
