blood typing Flashcards
what is the question you need to ask about blood typing?
will the surface antigens of the donor cells react with the antibodies of the recipient?
what occurs if there is a rxn btwn the surface antigens in the donor with the antibodies of the recipient?
agglutination
What type of blood has an A antigen and a B antibody (agglutinin)?
type A
what type of antigen and antibody does type B blood have?
B surface antigen A agglutinin (antibody)
what type of antigen and antibody does type AB blood have?
A and B surface antigen
what type of blood has no surface antigen? what is its antibody (agglutinin)
type O has no surface antigen and A and B agglutinin
what blood type is the universal donor?
O type has no surface antigens therefore there cannot be a rxn between the donor surface antigens and the recipient’s antibodies
what blood type is the universal receptor?
AB has no antibodies so it is unable to react to any surface antigens
what is the basic composition of blood?
formed elements and plasma
what are the formed elements of blood?
erythrocytes, leukocytes and platelets
what is the hematocrit?
% of blood comprised of RBC
what is plasma made of
92% h2o
8% solutes
what are some of the solutes in plasma?
proteins like
albumin
fibrinogen
globulins
the O2 carrying capacity of the blood is directly dependent on the concentration of what?
erythrocytes
what is the concentration of erythrocytes and leukocytes in the blood?
RBC 4.5-5.5 million per cc
WBC 5000-9000 per cc
