Blood transport system Flashcards
What are arteries?
Thick walled blood vessel carrying blood away from the heart
What are arterioles?
Small arteries
Blood flows away from the heart within arteries and as the blood gets further away from the heart then various branches of the artery take the blood to parts of the body (these branches are arterioles)
What are veins?
Thin walled blood vessel carrying blood towards the heart
Wha are venues?
Small being
Collect blood that has passed through the different parts of the body and these unite to form large veins that take blood back to the heart
What are capillaries?
Tiny blood vessels supplying nutrients to cells and removing waste materials
What are the functions of the blood?
Transport gas, nutrients, waste
Regulates temperature
Buffers and balances acid
What is the composition of blood?
About 60% plasma and 40% formed elements (red and white blood cells and blood platelets)
How does the shunting of blood occur?
Through dilation and constriction of the arterioles
Define blood pressure
Cardiac output x total peripheral resistance
As the heart pumps blood through the blood vessels, the vessels offer resistance (like friction) to the flow of blood and this creates the blood pressure
Define systolic pressure
Pressure of the heart contracting
Define diastolic pressure
Pressure of the relaxed heart
Diastolic blood pressure remains constant during exercise
