Blood Transfusion- indications Flashcards
what are indications for red cell transfusion?
-major bleed
-Symptomatic anaemic Hb<70g/L
(<80g/L if cardiac disease)
what are indications for platelet transfusion?
-prophylaxis in patients with bone marrow failure or very low platelet count
-treatment of bleeding in thrombocytopenic patients (low platelets)
-prophylaxis prior to surgery/ procedure in thrombocytopenic patients
what are indications for fresh frozen plasma?
-treatment of bleeding patient with coagulopathy (PT> 1.5)
-Prior to surgery or procedure with coagulopathy (PT ratio >1.5)
-managmenet of massive haemorrhage
-transfuse in early trauma
how are red cells stored?
35 days at 4 degrees
how is FFP stored?
3 years at -30 degrees
how are platelets stored?
22 degrees for 7 days with agitation
what does fresh frozen plasma contain?
-clotting factors
-albumin
-immunoglobin
what does cryoprecipate contain?
-Factor VIII
-Fibrinogen
advantage of cryoprecipitate?
allows large concentration of factor VIII to be administered in small volume
