Blood toxicity Flashcards
Blood toxicity
Adverse effects of toxins/chemicals on blood in an indirect way via depression of bone marrow or by directly affecting blood cells.
Blood poisoning
Not directly caused by a toxin but rather a bacterial infection of the bloodstream.
Leukocytes (6)
Neutrophils - Phagocytize bacteria
Eosinophils - Release chemicals to kill parasites
Monocytes - developing macrophages
Macrophages - Phagocytize foreign materials
Basophils - Clots injuries
Natural killer cells - kill cancerous cells
Toxicity result on bone marrow
Severely impaired blood cell production in depressed bone marrow.
Pancytopenia
All blood cell types are not generated.
Anemia
Red blood cells are not generated.
Leukopenia
White blood cell types are not generated.
Thrombocytopenia
Platelets are not generated.
Agents associated with Pancytopenia
Benzene, ionizing radiation, anti-metabolites and alkylating agents.
Agents associated with anemia
Methotrexate, chloramphenicol, phenylbutazone.
Acute radiation syndrome
Constellation of health effects present 24 hours following ionizing radiation exposure.
Hemolysis
Damage or destruction of red blood cells, often caused by cephalosporins, quinidine and high doses of penicllin.
Agents associated with thrombocytopenia
Quinine, cistplatin, cyclophosphamide, heparin and gold salts.
Anemic hypoxia
Carbon monoxide poisoning, it binds much easier (230x) to hemoglobin leaving the blood and body starved of oxygen when in high levels.
