Blood: Leukocytes Flashcards
What is a granulocyte?
a lobed shape nuclei with visible granules
What leukocytes are granulocytes?
Neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophils
What is a agranulocyte?
spherical or kidney shaped nuclei with no visible granules
What leukocytes are agranulocyte?
Lymphocytes and monocytes
Function of Neutrophils?
Engulf & destroy foreign bacteria ( most common leukocyte ) , more are produced during infections
Function of Eosinophils?
two lobed nuclei, kill parasitic worms ingested in food
Function of Basophils?
lessen allergic reactions, release histamines ( dilate blood vessels to allow leukocytes to rush to an infection or allergies )
Function of Lymphocytes?
Large and spherical nucleus, mostly found in your lymph nodes rather than in your bloodstream, two types ( T-cells and B-cells )
Function of Monocytes?
Kidney shaped nucleus, if monocytes leave blood and enter surrounding tissue they become macrophages ( attack and engulf viruses, parasites, and infections )
Mnemonic device for remembering amount per leukocytes?
Never ( Neutrophils )
Let ( Lymphocytes )
Monkeys ( Monocytes )
Eat ( Eosinophils )
Bananas ( Basophils )
What is the percentage amount of each leukocyte?
Neutrophils: 41-75
Eosinophils: 1-5
Basophils: 0-1
Lymphocytes: 20-45
Monocytes: 3-8
What is a thrombocytes?
platelets, tiny fragments of other cells
Thrombocyte function?
To clot the blood when a blood vessel is broken
