Blood: Formed Elements Flashcards
Erythrocytes
Red blood cells
How much erythrocytes are in every litter of blood?
5 million
Function of erythrocytes?
transport oxygen around the body
Where are erythrocytes produced?
red bone marrow
Structure of erythrocytes?
Biconcave shape allows greater surface area.
Round sides allow for efficient movement.
Why must oxygen be carried by erythrocytes?
Oxygen is nonpolar so it is not soluble in blood
What is hemoglobin?
a protein inside erythrocytes that is composed of four chains called globins
What’s a heme?
a flat molecule within globins that holds an iron atom
Function of leukocytes?
protect the body from foreign cells or substances
How long do erythrocytes and leukocytes live for?
erythrocytes = 100-120 days
leukocytes = a couple days
