Blood: Composition & Plasma Flashcards
What are the three functions of blood?
- Transports oxygen, waste, and hormones
- Regulates body temperature, pH and fluid volume
- Prevents infections and blood loss
What type of tissue is blood?
connective tissue because there is a fluid matrix
What is the fluid matrix known as?
Plasma
Percentage of layers of blood?
55% plasma, 44% erythrocytes, 1% leukocytes/ platelets
What is a hematocrit?
The % of red blood cells
What does viscous mean?
Viscous means thick and sticky
How much more times is blood viscous than water?
5 times
What is the color range in blood?
Bright red to purplish
pH level range of blood?
7.35 - 7.45
How many liters of blood do you have in your body?
5-6 liters
Composition of plasma?
90% water, 10% dissolved gases, salts, minerals, nutrients, enzymes, hormones, etc.
What are the 3 basic types of proteins found in plasma?
- Albumin
- Globulins
- Fibrinogen
What is the function of Albumin?
Regulates osmosis between blood and tissues
What is the function of Globulins?
Transports substances and fight infections
What is the function of Fibrinogen?
Used for blood clotting
