Blood Glucose Drugs Flashcards
Tolbutamide
Hypoglycemic compounds:
Sulfonylurea receptor activator (Inducers of Insulin Secretion)
Useful only in Type II (NIDD)
- inc insulin release - dec plasma glucose
- effective if insulin “resistance” absent
Glyburide
Hypoglycemic compounds:
Sulfonylurea receptor activator (Inducers of Insulin Secretion)
Useful only in Type II (NIDD)
- inc insulin release - dec plasma glucose
- effective if insulin “resistance” absent
Glypizide
Hypoglycemic compounds:
Sulfonylurea receptor activator (Inducers of Insulin Secretion)
Useful only in Type II (NIDD)
- inc insulin release - dec plasma glucose
- effective if insulin “resistance” absent
Repaglinide
Hypoglycemic compounds:
K channel closers (inc Ca, Inducers of Insulin Secretion, for energy)
- inc insulin release - dec plasma glucose
- effective if insulin “resistance” absent
Exenatide
Hypoglycemic compounds:
Protein activators of insulin secretion (Inducers of Insulin Secretion)
Useful only in Type II (NIDD)
- Mimics incretin – GI hormone
- inc insulin release - dec plasma glucose
- effective if insulin “resistance” absent
Metformin
Hypoglycemic compounds:
Inhibitors of Glucose Absorption
- useful in type II, could use for type I
- dec Glucose absorption from GI
- dec Hepatic glucose production (from glycogen) & release (into blood)
- Effective regardless of insulin resistance
Pioglitazone
Anti-Hyperglycemic compounds: Insulin Sensitizers
- useful in type II, could use for type I
- inc insulin affinity for its receptors
- inc body sensitivity to insulin
- inc insulin response
- Counteracts insulin “resistance”
Rosiglitazone
Anti-Hyperglycemic compounds: Insulin Sensitizers
- useful in type II, could use for type I
- inc insulin affinity for its receptors
- inc body sensitivity to insulin
- inc insulin response
- Counteracts insulin “resistance”
