Block 6 Pharmacology Flashcards
Memantine - class
NMDA receptor antagonist
Memantine - MoA
Blocks prolonged Ca2+ influx and protects against chronically elevated concentration of glutamate.
Memantine - uses
Dementia
Diazepam - class
Benzodiazepine
Diazepam - MoA
Enhances effects of GABA by increasing affinity of receptor at regulatory site. Increases influx of Cl- causing hyper polarisation and inhibits action potential -> suppresses brain circuits.
Diazepam - uses
Severe anxiety disorder, sedative and muscle relaxant
Donepezil class
Reversible AChE inhibitor
Donepezil - MoA
Reversibly inhibits AChE - prevents hydrolysis of ACh.
Donepezil - uses
Dementia and Alzheimers.
Chlorpromazine - class
Phenothiazine based antipsychotic - dopamine and serotonin receptor antagonist
Chlorpromazine - MoA
Long term adaptation of brain to blocking dopamine receptors.
Chlorpromazine - uses
Long term schizophrenia, antiemetic and sedative.
Haloperidol - class
Dopamine receptor antagonist
Haloperidol - MoA
Depresses CNS via inhibiting RAS and inhibiting catecholamine receptors.
Haloperidol - uses
Sedative and antiemetic.
Amitriptyline - class
Serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor (SNRI)
Amitriptyline - MoA
Metabolised to nortriptyline which inhibits the pumps and increases serotonin and NA levels.
Amitriptyline - uses
Depression, chronic pain, IBS, sleep disorders, agitation
