Block 2 Phase III - Powerplants Flashcards
What are the hazard areas around the engine?
Inlet and exhaust area
What should be on any time the engines are turning?
Anti collision lights
What type of engine is on the P-8A?
CFM56-7B
High bypass, Dual-rotor, axial flow turbo fan
27,300lbs of Thrust
What are the 5 fuel tank groups?
M1 M2 Center Fwd Aft
And two surge tanks
What are the 6 sections of the CFM56-7B?
1) Fan and Booster section
2) High Pressure Compressor
3) Combustor
4) High Pressure Turbine
5) Low Pressure Turbine
6) Accessory Drive
Describe the purpose of the Fan and Booster section.
The fan and booster section increases the speed of the air to create compression.
Describe the purpose of the High Pressure Compressor.
The HPC is a 9 stage compressor that sends compressed air to the combustor as well as supplies bleed air for aircraft pneumatic systems.
Describe the purpose of the Combustor section.
The combustor section mixes air from the compressors and fuel from the fuel nozzles to make hot gases.
Describe the purpose of the High Pressure Turbine.
The HPT converts the energy from the hot gases provided by the combustor section into mechanical energy to turn the HPC rotor and accessory drive.
What components make up the accessory drive?
Inlet Gear Box (IGB) Radial Drive Shaft (RDS) Transfer Gear Box (TGB) Horizontal Drive Shaft (HDS) Accessory Gear Box (AGB)
What is the total fuel capacity of the P8A in gallons?
10,856
What makes the P8A an all weather aircraft?
Bleed air for thermal anti icing
Electrical anti icing
Windshield wipers
What type of Aux Power Unit (APU) is on the P8A and what does it provide?
Honeywell 131-9B, Self contained gas turbine engine installed in a fireproof compartment in the tail section.
Provides the Aircraft with bleed air and electrical power
Describe the function of the Engine Fuel and Control System.
The EFCS calculates the quantity of fuel necessary to make commanded thrust by metering the fuel and injecting it into the combustor. The EFCS also sends necessary fuel to the engine air system for efficient and stable operation.
Describe the function of the Fuel Distribution System.
Supplies fuel to the engine for combustion and servo system operation via the Fuel Pump Assembly, the IDG oil cooler, and Servo Fuel Heater.
