BLM 11-2 The Air You Breathe Flashcards
what does the nose provide
-passageway for the entrance of air
air is what in the nasal cavity
-warm, moist, filtered
what special cells/structures are present in the nasal cavity that allow for these functions (4)
- hair
- cilia
- mucous producing cells
- rich supply of blood
when does a person breathe with the mouth instead of the nose
- when O2 supply depleted, breathing rate increases, larger volume of air can by inhaled from the mouth
- when nasal passageway blocked (cold, congestion)
- mouth provides an alternate air passageway
how is the air within the trachea different in “mouth breathing” and “nose breathing”
- “mouth breathing” air contains pollution or particles because its not filtered by hairs or cilia
- “mouth breathing” air lower in temp and less moist
what are the advantages of breathing via the nose
- increased filtration if breathing by nose
- greater chance to warm and moisten the air (improve diffusion rate)
what are the disadvantages of breathing via the nose
-less air comes in
what are the advantages of breathing via the mouth
- provides alternate pathway when breathing through nose not possible
- allows for greater intake of air when necessary
what are the disadvantages of breathing via the mouth
- air contains more pollution/particles bc not filtered by hair/cilia
- lower in temp
- less moist
what is the function of the epiglottis
- trapdoor that prevents food or liquids from enterring trachea/lungs
- not possible to swallow and breathe at the same time as epiglottis closes over the trachea when you swallow
how does coughing and sneezing protect your respiratory system
- coughing: reflex triggered, means for removing irritants
- sneezing: the air rushes out at a very fast speed which quickly removed dust debris slowly gathered by cilia and mucous
