BLM 1-1 Functions of Respiratory System Flashcards
1
Q
larynx (voicebox)
A
- contains vocal cords
- passage way for air between pharynx and trachea
2
Q
lungs
A
- paired cone shaped organ in the thoracic cavity
- right lung: three lobes, left lung: two lobes
- covered by pleura (serous membrane)
- contains alveoli
3
Q
nasal cavity
A
- space in which air is warmed, moistened, filtered
- narrow canals separated from one another by septum composed of bone and cartilage
4
Q
diaphragm
A
- large muscular sheet that contracts to increase thoraicic pressure
- separates thoracic cavity and abdominal cavity
5
Q
nostril
A
-air first enters body through nostril
6
Q
pharynx (throat)
A
- cross road leading to esophagus or trachea
- connects nasal and oral cavity to larynx
7
Q
bronchiole
A
-smaller, numerous branches leading to alveoli
8
Q
trachea (windpipe)
A
- tube w cartiaginous rings that allow air to pass to the bronchus -> bronchiole
- connect larynx to primary bronchi
- C shape cartilaginous face esophagus, expand when swallowing
9
Q
glottis
A
-slit within vocal chords
10
Q
vocal cords
A
- mucosal folds supported by elastic ligaments
- when air expelled past vocal chords through glottis, vocal chords vibrate, produce sound
11
Q
bronchus
A
-branch off the trachea leading to bronchioles
12
Q
epiglottis
A
- prevents food from enterring trachea
- when food swallowed, larynx moves upward against epiglottis
