Oxybutynin

A

Urinary bladder
spasm
Overactive
bladder resulting
in symptoms of
urinary
frequency,
urgency, or urge
incontinence
Adverse: Drowsiness,
dizziness
Tachycardia
Blurred vision
Constipation, dry
mouth, dyspepsia,
nausea
urinary
hesitancy.
↓ sweating
Oral or
transdermal
patch
Tablets must be
swallowed
whole; do not
break, crush or
chew.
AVOID with
obstructive
disorders,
myasthenia
gravis, glaucoma

Fosfomycin

A

Uncomplicated
UTI caused by
Gram – negative
bacteria
CNS: headache,
dizziness
GI: nausea, diarrhea,
(unpleasant GI effects
may limit usefulness)
GU: vaginitis
One-dose drug;
use only if > 12
yrs old
UTI treatment:
Encourage
acidifying foods
and ↑ fluids

A

Relieves burning,
urgency,
frequency, and
pain related to
UTI’s, infection,
trauma, or
surgery.
Adverse: Headache
GI upset,
hepatotoxicity
Reddish orange
urine renal toxicity
Rash, yellow
tint to skin
Oral, has rapid
onset
Should not be
used longer
than 2 days
give with food
to ↓ GI upset

A

outflow
obstruction in
male patients
with BPH.
Collaborative
Treatment of HTN
Adverse: Dizziness,
headache, depression,
drowsiness, fatigue,
nervousness,
weakness.
First dose may
cause orthostatic
hypotension,
arrhythmias, chest
pain, edema,
palpitations.
sexual
dysfunction
Teaching:
Change
positions slowly
to ↓ orthostatic
hypotension.
Avoid drinking
alcohol.
Monitor BP &
Pulse 2-6 hr
after first dose,
with each ↑ in
dose and
periodically
during therapy.
Report
significant
changes.
Monitor I & O
and weight and
assess for
edema

Finasteride

A

BPH
Can also be used
for male
patterned
baldness
Adverse: ↓Libido, sexual
dysfunction,
retrograde/diminished
ejaculation
gynecomastia
GI upset
Women of
childbearing years
should not be exposed
to semen or to the
crushed drug to avoid
absorption.
Assess client for
symptoms of
prostatic
hyperplasia
prior to and
periodically
during therapy.
(at least 6-12
months of
therapy may be
necessary to see
effects)
Cannot donate
blood for 6
months after
taking- exposure to testosterone-
blocking effects;
should not
father child in
this time
