9
Q

Describe the major climate events in the Pacific in a normal year (think: what happens in the East? What happens in the West?).

A

East: wind blows Westward from SA replacing warm surface water with cold-nutrient rich water from the depths.
West: warm surface waters pool, accompanying air mass creates a “cloud factory” that causes the monsoons.

Q

Describe the major climate events in the Pacific in an abnormal year, or “ENSO” year (think: what happens in the East? What happens in the West?).

A

East: no winds, no up-welling of cold water, poor fishing
West: no “cloud factory”, no monsoons, drought in Asia

Q

What are the 2 kinds of drought?

A

Q

In 1850, where was the most cotton produced? Where was it sent to be spun? Where was the most cotton produced in 1870?

A

Produced in the American South, sent to Manchester because it’s a little bit wet and apparently that makes cotton-spinning easier. By 1870, India was producing the vast majority of cotton.

Q

Around 1865, how did the world’s cotton economy change?

A

The American civil war caused cotton shortages, so Egypt and India upped their production to compensate and at one point produced 3/4 of the world’s cotton. Then Egypt went bankrupt in 1873 and only India remained.

16
Q

How did the massive deflation of the late 19th century affect people in India?

A

Cotton was practically worthless, so people were poor. Famines ensued.

17
Q

In what 3 ways can a peasant guard against starvation?

A
  1. Domestic hoards of grain
  2. Family ornaments/jewellery (sell for food)
  3. Credit with a local money lender
18
Q

So what 3 factors contributed to India and China falling behind Europe (becoming the “3rd world”)?

A
  1. Industrial Revolution (mostly in Europe, not Asia)
  2. Imperialism
  3. “Ghost Acres” (West’s colonial lands)
19
Q

What is the climatological term for El Nino? What is the name ENSO derived from?

A

Southern Oscillation

ENSO = El Nino + Southern Oscillation

20
Q

What is the name of the zone where the cloud factory is made?

A

Indo-Australian Convergence Zone (IACZ)

21
Q

What did Henry Blandford do?

A

In 1876 he discovered high pressure anomaly over China
