Duke

A

Eastern Screech owl, red phase, hatched 2018, male

Duke and sibling fell out
of nest. After evaluation, it was determined Duke was a failure to thrive. He has a malocclusion (misalignment of upper and lower jaw) of his beak, Bottom beak will over grow and needs regular trimming to be able to eat.

Phoenix

Harris’s Hawk, male, hatched 1997

Reason for captivity: He was raised for sport of falconry; Hand reared until 6 weeks old by mother.

Special needs: He requires heat if temperature is below 32°F. Housed in rehab room for winter months. Has seasonal sinus problems. 1 cc Benadryl/day will cure.
Other: Can be aggressive or hormonal and inappropriate during breeding season.

Reason for captivity: Struck by vehicle; Not fully flighted
Diet: 90-100g; mice or rat whole.
Weight: 800-1000g
Special needs: She is very hesitant of everything.
Other: Tried training with her for a while, but she was not happy. She does not do training now and is a display bird only.

Reason for captivity: Struck by vehicle; Injury to right wing; Compromised flight
Diet: 90g; total chopped, rat, pheasant, or muskrat head; Hand feed
Weight: 460-610g
Gloved: He will step up for food. Can thread jesses then and put on rest of equipment. Have to be patient with him.
Crating: Once equipment is on, back him into crate and he will step on perch. Steps up coming out great.
Special Needs: Watch his feet closely. He gets scabs on the bottom of his feet. Also, he needs a heat lamp to sit under during the winter.

Blaze

Reason for captivity: Trauma to left shoulder; Crash landed when fledging
Diet: 140g; mice, rat, pups, muskrat, pheasant
Weight: 904-1022g
Gloved: Can be aggressive. Thread jesses while on glove.
Crating: She cannot be in a crate with a perch because she will break her tail. Use a dog crate with a daisy mat on the bottom. When traveling, cover the crate with a canvas crate cover.
Special Needs: Monitor mood, wire hanging, feather condition, and tail condition. She damages her tail and primaries by wire hanging.

Niles

A

Amercian kestrel, male, hatched 2018

Reason for captivity: Right leg fracture healed at an odd angle, compromising use of that foot. He self-mutilated which resulted in having to amputate one of his toes. He would not be able to hunt in the wild.
Diet: 20g; mice, pups, muskrat, pheasant
Weight: 100g
Gloved: Have him step up on glove. Put glove in front of him, and he will hop on it. Then put equipment on. He appreciated being fed mealworms while putting equipment on.
Crating: Has to use crate with flat perch because of his foot.
Special Needs: He cannot live in an area with glass windows that are not covered by wire, as he runs into them and cracks his beak. Need to monitor his bad leg and foot for any spots or issues.
Other: Can be amorous toward some staff members and aggressive toward others. Do not clean cage until after he is fed.

American Kestrel, female, hatched 2021

Fed an improper diet before coming to OBS. Human imprint.
Diet: 20g; mice, rat, pheasant, and muskrat. Most is given as hand feeds.
Weight: 110-130g
Gloved: Will let you thread jesses while on perch. Then steps up on to glove to put on rest of equipment.
Crating: Will step backwards onto perch or hop on to it. Thread leash through hole on side of crate, tie off on carabiner on front. Have a hold of leash when opening crate.
Special Needs:
Other: In training for flight demos.

Bald Eagle, male, hatched 1988

Reason for captivity: Struck by vehicle and injured his left wing in 2013. Amputated his left wrist in 2015.
Diet: 300-500g; rat, muskrat, fish, pheasant. Will eat deer carcass Weight: 8.4-9lbs
Special Needs: Vet will come to OBS to do check-up. Watch for broken blood feathers when molting.
Other: He is a display bird only due to age. He is currently living with Tahoe.

Diet: 300-500g; fish, muskrat, rat, rabbit, venison
Weight: 3,200 grams

Reason for captivity: Had West Nile virus, has compromised vision and survival skills
Diet: 350g; muskrat, rat, mice, fish. Hand feed.
Weight: 5100g
Gloved: Lets you put all equipment on. Steps back onto glove. Training inside and outside the enclosure.
Crating: Currently focusing on training for on-site programs.
Special Needs:
Other: She likes to play with “toys”: balls, bark, pine branches, etc.

Human imprint
Diet: 170-220g; mice, rat, quail, rabbit, fish or deer
Weight: 1800-1855g
Gloved: He steps forward with command “Step.”
Crate: He walks into crate on his own. He travels better in a crate with no perch.
Special needs: He is very aggressive and will attack you. He is imprinted on the director (Gail), so he will allow her to glove and crate.
Other: He can stay overnight for a program and free loft. Take caution when feeding him or cleaning his cage. Always keep an eye on him. Also, he has had frostbite on toes in the past, so he comes inside during winter months.

Other: He bites when he gets excited, so tell him no.

Reason for captivity: Human imprint; Wing Injury prior to coming to OBS
Diet: Anything; chicks, mice, peanut butter, fruit, bread, crackers, leftovers, egg, etc. No cat food, and he needs a low iron diet.
Special needs: Change his water daily. If he seems agitated do not enter cage. He is not fond of men at all and will sometimes attack own wing when men are around.
Other: Cece dominates in the cage. He will show aggression, so take caution when in cage. Also, his former owner will occasionally stop in and bring him food. Do not let her in cage with him.

Ring-Billed Gull (seagull), male, brought in as adult in 2014

Had a partial wing amputation and cannot fly
Diet: Anything; Make sure he gets enough protein (worms, fish mice)
Weight: ~390g
Special needs: He may need to come inside during the winter time depending on how harsh the winter is. Ended up with a bloody wing one winter, so he had to be brought in.
Other: He can catch mealworms!!

Reason for captivity: Educational touch animal
Diet: chicken scratch with oyster shells mixed in; mealworms and fruit
Weight: 1000-1220g
Travel: She is retired
Other: She runs around free during day and is caged at night. Watch that she does not go in the woods when outside.

Reason for captivity: Illegal pets/ unknown territory; box turtles cannot be released in any location other than their confirmed territory- as they will spend the rest of their life trying to return home.
Special needs:
Other: Sheldon is slightly bigger than Terra. Terra has multiple cracks and chips in her shell.
