Relapses & remissions
Alternating pattern between manic & depressive episodes
90% have at least 1 hospitalization
Depressive episodes more frequent
Clinical Course of Bipolar II
Depressive symptoms more frequent than hypomanic episodes
Less marital depression
More likely at attempting & completing suicide
Co-morbidities with Bipolar Disorder
High rates of co-morbid ETOH or substance abuse
High risk for addictive disorder
Co-morbid anxiety disorder common
Many attempt suicide
Define Mixed State
Presence of both depressive & manic symptoms simultaneously
Experiences of a Mixed State
Impulsiveness Insomnia Irritability Flight of ideas Suicidal thoughts Guilt Feelings of hopelessness Changes in appetite
What can mixed episodes lead to?
Panic attacks
Substance abuse
Suicide
Define Cyclothymia
Numerous periods of hypomania and of depression persisting for at least 2 years
Doesn’t meat DSM criteria for major depression
