Chronic episodic mood disorder with at least one of episode of mania/hypomania and a further episode of mania or depression
What are the features of hypomania?
Elevated mood >4 days Increased energy/activity Increased self esteem Increased talkativeness Increased sex drive Decreased need for sleep
What are the features of mania?
Elevated mood >1 week Increased self esteem/grandiosity Pressure of speech Flight of ideas Distractable Decreased need for sleep Increased libido Loss of social inhibitions
How is the diagnosis of mania made?
3/9 needed
- grandiosity/increased self esteem
- reduced sleep
- pressure of speech
- flight of ideas
- distractability
- psychomotor agitation
- reckless behaviour
- loss of social inhibitions
- increased sexual energy
What is bipolar-1?
1 or more manic episode +/- depression
What is bipolar-2?
1 or more depressive episode + hypomania
What is rapid cycling?
4 or more episodes in a year
What are the 5 states of bipolar disorder described by ICD-10?
