What is a biosimilar?
- similar but not identical in structure to the reference product
- made with the same type of living sources, same treatment benefit, and potential side effects as the RP
What is an extrapolation of indications?
- used for approval of a biosimilar in one or more additional indications that are shared with the reference product
- NO trials for indications
What is an interchangeable biosimilar?
- may be substituted for a reference product without consulting a prescriber
- additional trials needed for approval, not all biosimilars have interchangeable status
How do biosimilars obtain interchangeability?
no decrease in effectivness or increase in risk when switching
