Biopsychology- Spine, Brain, Nervous system Flashcards
What is the layout of the nervous system?
Nervous System— Central NS (CNS)- Brain & Spinal cord
/
Peripheral NS (PNS)—- Somatic NS
/
Autonomic NS (ANS)—- Sympathetic NS &
parasympathetic NS
What is the main function of the central nervous system?
Integrate sensory info from peripheral NS- regulating the body’s physiological processes & coordinate (un)conscious activity in response to an input
What is the main function of the spinal cord?
Relay info between the brain and the rest of the body
What are 4 main areas of the brain?
1) Cerebrum
2) Cerebellum
3) Diencephalon
4) Brain stem
What is the cerebrum divided up into?
4 lobes, with different primary functions
What are the 4 lobes in the cerebrum?
1) Frontal lobe
2) Parietal lobe
3) Occipital lobe
4) Temporal lobe
What does the frontal lobe do?
Involved in thought, speech, working memory
What does the parietal lobe do?
Processes sensory info (touch, pain, temp etc)
What does the occipital lobe do?
Processes visual info
What does the temporal lobe do?
Involved in hearing & language comprehension
Where are the 4 lobes in the cerebrum?
Frontal= Front top
Parietal= Middle top
Occipital= Back middle
Temporal= Middle bottom
What does the diencephalon contain?
1) Thalamus
2) Hypothalamus
What does the thalamus do?
Relay station for nerve impulses from senses
What does the hypothalamus do?
Regulate body temp, hunger & thirst & links endocrine system and NS
Where is the diencephalon?
On top of the brain stem
Where is the cerebellum?
Beneath the back of the cerebrum
Where is the cerebrum?
The main top bit with the lines in
What does the cerebellum do?
Controls motor skills, balance & muscle coordination
What are 2 subcomponents of the NS?
1) Central NS
2) Peripheral NS
Where is the CNS?
Brain & spinal cord
What are 2 subcomponents of the peripheral NS?
1) Somatic NS
2) Autonomic NS
What are 2 subcomponents of the autonomic NS?
1) Sympathetic NS
2) Parasympathetic NS
What is the function of the somatic NS & what neurons does it have?
Controls voluntary movement of skeletal muscles (limbs)- carries sensory info to & from CNS
Has sensory & motor neurons
What is the function of the autonomic NS?
Governs involuntary activities of non-skeletal muscles & internal body systems (heartbeat & digestion0
