Biopsychology- Nervous system Flashcards
what is the nervous system?
controls everything you do made up of brain and spinal cord
whats the main function of the nervous system?
to carry messages to and from the body to your brain so that the brain can perform these messages and control things we do
Explain the nervous system as in all of the branches off it
Nervous system:
1) central nervous system (brain and spinal cord)
2) peripheral nervous system - 2.1)autonomic nervous system (communicates with internal organs and glands
2. 2) somatic nervous system (communicates with sense organs and voluntary muscles)
2. 11) sympathetic division (arousing)
2. 111) parasympathetic division (calming)
2. 22) sensory nervous system (sensory input)
2. 222) motor nervous system (motor system)
Nervous system 1) 2) 2. 1) 2.2) 2. 11) 2.111) 2.22) 2.222)
what is the function of the PNS?
to relay messages (nerve impulses) from the CNS to the rest of the body
what does the somatic nervous system do?
facilitates communication between the CNS and sense/outside world. under conscious control and control skeletal muscles
what does the autonomic nervous system do?
regulates involuntary physiological processes without conscious control, controls smooth muscles, internal organs and glands
what does the sympathetic nervous system do?
involved in responses that prepare the body for fight or flight
what does the parasympathetic nervous system do?
relax the body, returns us to our ‘normal’ resting state. rest and digest
the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are antagonistic what does this mean?
an association between organisms in which one benefits at the expense of the other.
In opposition
what happens during fight or flight response (sympathetic)
eyes: dilate- widen more light to see better/ see predators
salivary glands: reduces saliva- dry mouth, conserve energy
heart: increased rate and pressure- more blood and oxygen around the body so muscles can move and react quicker
lungs: breathingbincreases to get extra oxygen into blood
gut/digestion: low appetite, shut down of digestive system to conserve energy and react quicker
bladder & bowel: relax- conserve energy
what happens after fight or flight- relaxing (parasympathetic)
eyes: constrict
salivary glands: increases saliva production back to normal
heart: decreased rate and pressure
lungs: breathing rate slows down
gut/digestion: gets going again, returns to normal
bladder and bowel: muscles begin to constrict so don’t poo yourself
