regulates cell or organ activity within the body and control vital physiological processes in the body. made up of glands that secrete messages called hormones that bind to specific receptors

A
  • hypothalamus: responsible for stimulating the release of hormones from pituitary gland
  • pituitary gland: master gland receives signals from hypothalamus
  • pineal gland: melatonin, regulates sleep patterns
  • thyroid gland: thyroxine, triiodothyronine, regulates metabolism
  • thymus
  • pancreas
  • adrenal gland: adrenaline, dopamine, cortisol, produces hormones in response to stress, water balance, fight or flight. cortisol can suppress the immune system
  • ovaries: progesterone, oestrogen, produces eggs for fertilisation, menstrual cycle
  • placenta
  • testes: testosterone, sex drive, sperm…
