what is the endocrine system?
A
regulates cell or organ activity within the body and control vital physiological processes in the body. made up of glands that secrete messages called hormones that bind to specific receptors

chemical substances that circulate in the bloodstream and only affect target organs

what glands is the endocrine system made up of + function?
A
- hypothalamus: responsible for stimulating the release of hormones from pituitary gland
- pituitary gland: master gland receives signals from hypothalamus
- pineal gland: melatonin, regulates sleep patterns
- thyroid gland: thyroxine, triiodothyronine, regulates metabolism
- thymus
- pancreas
- adrenal gland: adrenaline, dopamine, cortisol, produces hormones in response to stress, water balance, fight or flight. cortisol can suppress the immune system
- ovaries: progesterone, oestrogen, produces eggs for fertilisation, menstrual cycle
- placenta
- testes: testosterone, sex drive, sperm…
